Finding the right ring size is the foundation of a comfortable piece of jewellery you will wear every day. In Canada, ring sizes are expressed in numbers (3 to 14) — the same system as in the United States and Mexico. The average size for a woman is between 6 and 7, and between 9 and 10 for a man. Here are three simple methods to find yours from home — or come see us on Plateau Mont-Royal for a free measurement with a professional ring sizer.

Measuring ring size with a paper strip around the finger

Three ways to find your size

Method A — String or paper strip

Wrap the base of your finger with a non-elastic string or a strip of paper. Mark the overlapping point. Measure the length in millimetres with a ruler. Divide the circumference by 3.14 to get the diameter. Compare in the table below. The string should hold without squeezing — it should pass over your knuckle without forcing.

Method B — Use an existing ring

Place a ring that fits you well (worn on the same finger) on a sheet of paper and trace the inside of the circle. Measure the inner diameter in millimetres with a ruler. Find the match in our table. Choose a ring worn on the left ring finger for an accurate measurement — it is the most common finger for engagement rings and wedding bands.

Method C — Free in-store measurement (recommended)

The most reliable method remains the professional ring sizer. Come see us at 1144, avenue du Mont-Royal Est — the measurement is free, no appointment needed, and takes less than 5 minutes. Ralph and the team will also advise you on the ideal band width for your comfort and lifestyle.

If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the next half-size up. A slightly larger band is always more comfortable than one that is too tight.

Tips for an accurate measurement

Measure at the end of the day. Your fingers are at their natural size in the evening, slightly larger than in the morning. It is the best time to get a measurement representative of daily wear.

Take 3 to 4 measurements. Space them across different times of day to confirm the size. A single measurement can be skewed by temperature or recent activity.

Watch the temperature — especially in Montreal. In winter, your fingers are thinner and can lose half a size. In summer, they swell slightly. Measure at a comfortable indoor temperature (19–22°C) for a reliable result in any season.

Wide band = half a size up. A band of 5 mm or more covers more surface and fits more snugly than a thin band. Add half a size for any band of 5 mm and above.

Knuckle vs. base of the finger. If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose an in-between size. The ring must pass the knuckle without forcing while staying snugly in place at the base.

"I have seen hundreds of clients come back for an avoidable adjustment. My advice: if you are hesitating between two sizes, go with the larger one. You can always size a band down, but sizing it up costs more and is not always possible."

Discreetly tracing the inside of a gold ring on paper for a surprise marriage proposal

Finding the size in secret

Planning a marriage proposal? Here are five discreet ways to find your partner's size without raising suspicion.

  1. Borrow one of their rings. Pick one worn on the left ring finger, trace the inside on paper, and bring us the drawing or the ring directly. It is the most accurate method.
  2. Ask someone close. A sister, a friend or a parent can ask the question naturally in conversation — without raising any suspicion.
  3. The finger technique. Slide one of their rings onto your own finger and mark where it stops. Bring that reference to the jeweller — Ralph can estimate the size from that indication.
  4. Impression in soap or clay. Press the inside of one of their rings into a dry bar of soap or modelling clay. The impression is enough for an accurate measurement.
  5. Order an average size. In absolute doubt, go with a size 6 (women) or 9 (men) — the best-selling sizes. At Diplomate, we offer a free adjustment within 30 days of purchase.
